Chief Master Sergeant Mikael “Mack” Sundin

Chief Master Sergeant Mikael “Mack” Sundin is the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Director, Defense Security Cooperation Agency. Chief Sundin assumed his current position in January 2023 and has served for more than 27 years. A native of Cloquet, Minnesota, he attended Air Force Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base (AFB), Texas, in July 1996. Upon graduation in August 1996, he attended both Aircraft Corrosion Control and Aircraft Structural Maintenance Schools at Sheppard AFB, Texas, and Millington Naval Air Station, Tennessee, respectively.

Chief Sundin has been assigned to numerous units throughout his career, to include the 148th Maintenance Squadron, Duluth International Airport, Minnesota, and the 140th Maintenance Squadron, Buckley AFB, Colorado, as an Aircraft Structural Maintenance Technician, Corrosion Control NCOIC, and Crashed, Damaged, Disabled Aircraft Recovery Team Member and Team Chief. He retrained into the Aircraft Fuel Systems career field in 2008 and served at the 140th Maintenance Squadron, Buckley AFB, Colorado, as the Aircraft Fuel Systems Superintendent before returning to service in his original career field as the Fabrication Element Flight Chief at the same location. Subsequently, he was selected for development as a Sister Service Student at the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy (USASMA) Class 65, Ft. Bliss, Texas. Upon completion of USASMA he was identified as the Senior Enlisted Leader Management Office Manager in the Office of the Air National Guard (ANG) Command Chief, Andrews AFB, Maryland, and culminated his assignment as the ANG Command Chief Executive Assistant.

As a Chief Master Sergeant (Senior Enlisted Leader), he served at the National Guard Bureau Office of Legislative Liaison, Pentagon, Washington, D.C., as the Air Enlisted Legislative Liaison; 140th Wing, Buckley AFB, Colorado, as Command Chief Master Sergeant; United States European Command (U.S. EUCOM), Stuttgart, Germany, as Senior Enlisted Guard Advisor to U.S. EUCOM and Senior Enlisted Leader, Directorate of Plans, Policy, Strategy and Capabilities; and the Continental North American Aerospace Defense Command Region, 1st Air Force, Air Forces Northern and Air Forces Space, Tyndall AFB, Florida, as Command Chief. His deployments include tours in Southwest Asia, Iraq, Korea, and Djibouti, Horn of Africa.

Chief Sundin’s military education includes: Airman Leadership School, USAF Noncommissioned Officer Academy, USAF Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy, Reserve Component National Security Course, Senior Enlisted Joint Professional Military Education, United States Sergeants Major Academy, Chiefs’ Leadership Course, Command Chief Orientation Course, Continuous Process Improvement for Executives Program, Enterprise Leadership Seminar, Strategic Mindset Seminar, and General and Flag Officer Homeland Security Executive Seminar. He is also a graduate of National Defense University, Keystone Joint Command Senior Enlisted Leader Course. His civilian education includes an Associate of Science in Aviation Operations, a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership, and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership.

Chief Sundin’s personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2nd award), Meritorious Service Medal (3rd award), AF Commendation Medal, and AF Achievement Medal.
