Secretary Austin and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani Discuss Ongoing U.S.-Iraqi Security Cooperation

On April 15, 2014 at the Pentagon, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III welcomed Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani during his first visit to Washington, D.C. as Prime Minister. The Secretary and the Prime Minister affirmed the two nations' commitment to an enduring U.S.-Iraq bilateral defense relationship and to a strong Iraq, capable of self-defense in support of a more stable and peaceful region. The Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq and the Secretary of Defense discussed ongoing U.S.-Iraqi security cooperation, joint efforts to address persistent security threats to the United States and Iraq, and the future of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS mission in Iraq.

Department of Defense Unveils Comprehensive Recommendations to Strengthen Foreign Military Sales

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III approved a tasking memo from the Department of Defense (DoD) Foreign Military Sales (FMS) Tiger Team that highlights six key FMS pressure points and directs implementation of recommendations to improve and accelerate the Department's institutional processes to execute FMS cases. The efforts of the Tiger Team and the Department's commitment to improve the FMS system advance the direction of the 2022 National Defense Strategy to break down barriers to working with allies and partners.

Allies, Partners Central to U.S. Integrated Deterrence Effort

Both Russia and China figure heavily into the content of the 2022 National Defense Strategy, which was released in October. Within the strategy, integrated deterrence — including increased partnerships with American allies and partners — plays a central role to defending against both the acute and strategic threats posed by those two nations.

DSCA Birthday Message from the Secretary of Defense

The Honorable Lloyd Austin, the Secretary of Defense, shared taped remarks congratulating DSCA on its 50th anniversary.  He thanked DSCA for half a century of enabling the United States and U.S. Allies and our partner nations for building a united front and extending our mutual strength against all adversaries.  Secretary Austin cited our recent support of Ukraine using Security Cooperation programs.
