The Defense Department today released its 2024 Arctic Strategy. The strategy acknowledges how environmental changes are affecting the Arctic region, details the implications for U.S. security and spells out how the department plans to be ready to meet new challenges there.

Maj. Gen. Matthew McFarlane, the deputy commanding general of America’s First Corps, visits with leaders of the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Feb. 21, 2024. McFarlane toured the future TSC facility and met with TSC leadership to discuss ways to collaborate to advance security priorities in the Arctic region. The Stevens Center is committed to supporting I Corps operations by building interagency partnerships to understand and address Arctic and climate security challenges.

DOD Announces Basing Decision for the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies

The Department of Defense identified Anchorage, Alaska, as the sole candidate city to host the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies, the Department of Defense (DoD) Regional Center for the Arctic. 

The Department will continue to work through the Department of the Air Force Strategic Basing process to evaluate facilities within Anchorage to finalize the site selection.

DoD Announces New Senior Advisor for Arctic Security Affairs

The Department of Defense announced the following advisor selection on September 22, 2021:

Randy “Church” Kee, a retired U.S. Air Force major general, assumes duties as Senior Advisor for Arctic Security Affairs to assist with establishing the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies, the Department of Defense’s sixth and newest regional center.
