GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany (Jan. 14, 2022) – The U.S. State Department’s Ambassador Eric Nelson will be appointed as an Associate Director of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany in early 2022. As an Ambassador-in-Residence, Nelson will contribute a Department of State perspective to the Marshall Center’s mission to Educate, Engage and Empower security partners and leaders to collectively affect regional, transnational, and global challenges.
Ambassador Nelson will join the Marshall Center after service in Sarajevo as the U.S. Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he led the U.S. government’s efforts to expand economic prosperity, advance regional security, combat corruption, strengthen the rule of law and to advance self-reliance by promoting citizens working for reform and progress.
Ambassador Nelson says, “I’m delighted to return to Bavaria and join the team at the Marshall Center to continue my commitment to leadership development, to once again contribute to strengthening the German-American partnership, and to continue working on regional security in Europe and transnational threats.” Mr. Nelson served as U.S. Consul General in Munich from 2006-2009.
