Hagel Praises New Defense Cooperation Agreements With India

WASHINGTON, Jan. 25, 2015 – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel issued a statement today applauding agreements on defense cooperation between the United States and India, announced by President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Hagel: DoD to Begin Safety Testing for Ebola Vaccine Candidate

WASHINGTON, Sept. 26, 2014 — The Defense Department has made critical contributions to the fight against the deadly Ebola outbreak in West Africa, and today Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel described additional ways the Pentagon is helping in the broader battle against infectious disease outbreaks of the future.

He spoke at a gathering of top government and military officials and infectious disease experts from 44 countries here to attend the Global Health Security Agenda, or GHSA, Summit hosted by President Barack Obama.

Hagel Lauds Ukraine’s Forces in Meeting With Defense Minister

WASHINGTON, Sept. 4, 2014 — Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel today praised the actions of the Ukrainian armed forces in their current engagements in eastern Ukraine and pledged continued U.S. support for their efforts, Pentagon Press Secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby said.

Hagel made the comments during a meeting with Col. Gen. Valeriy Heletey, Ukraine’s defense minister, on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Wales, Kirby said in a statement summarizing the meeting.

Hagel Urges Expanded U.S.-Indian Defense Cooperation

Hagel Urges European NATO Members to Boost Defense Budgets

WASHINGTON, June 4, 2014 – NATO European allies must dedicate more money to defense spending, and all are ready to do their part in the follow-on operation in Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said at NATO headquarters in Brussels today.

The secretary spoke at a news conference after meetings with alliance defense ministers.

Russia’s actions in and around Ukraine were a major concern for the ministers, Hagel said, adding that Russia’s actions “constitute the most significant and direct challenge to European security since the end of the Cold War.”

Hagel Meets With Defense Ministers From Baltic Nations

WASHINGTON, June 3, 2014 – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel met today in Brussels with the defense ministers of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

Hagel and his Baltic nation counterparts discussed a number of common security concerns, Pentagon officials said, including recent actions by Russia in and along the Ukrainian border and the subsequent reassurance measures taken by the United States and NATO.

The secretary thanked the three nations for their continued participation in these reassurance measures, officials added.

Hagel Arrives in Saudi Arabia for Defense Ministerial

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, May 13, 2014 – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel arrived here today to participate in a Gulf Cooperation Council defense ministerial conference.

The bulk of the meetings will take place tomorrow, but shortly after arriving here today, Hagel met with Saudi Vice Defense Minister Salman bin Sultan.

Hagel Meets With Egyptian Foreign Minister at Pentagon

WASHINGTON, April 30, 2014 – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel met today with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy to discuss recent events in Egypt and the Middle East, as well as the defense relationship between the United States and Egypt.

Hagel Notifies Egypt of Upcoming U.S. Certification

WASHINGTON, April 23, 2014 – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel informed his Egyptian counterpart yesterday that Secretary of State John F. Kerry soon will certify to Congress that Egypt is sustaining the strategic relationship with the United States and is meeting its obligations under the 1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty.

In a statement summarizing Hagel’S phone call to Egyptian Defense Minister Col. Gen. Sedki Sobhy, Pentagon Press Secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby said these certifications are required to obligate fiscal year 2014 funds for assistance to the Egyptian government.

Hagel, China’s Defense Minister Build Military Relations Model

BEIJING, April 8, 2014 – At the invitation of Chinese Defense Minister Gen. Chang Wanquan, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel visited the Chinese Defense Ministry’s headquarters here today.

Hagel met with Chang and then a larger group of defense officials before he and Chang revealed during a news conference a new model for U.S.-China military-to-military relations.
