At the request of the government of the Philippines, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has directed U.S. Pacific Command to support U.S. government humanitarian relief operations in the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan.

The initial focus includes surface maritime search and rescue (SAR), medium-heavy helicopter lift support, airborne maritime SAR, fixed-wing lift support and logistics enablers.

“We are currently monitoring Typhoon Haiyan and its impact,” Little said.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 5, 2013 – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel today praised the key role Belgium continues to play in supporting security efforts in several regions of the world, Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said.

In a statement summarizing a Pentagon meeting between Hagel and Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Pieter De Crem, Little noted that Belgium has pledged security assistance funding and agreed to train security forces in Afghanistan, supporting stability efforts post-2014.
